WATERMAKER CARE / 05

Watermaker care for yacht owners

Identify the installed model, follow its care guidance and record output alongside the conditions in which it was produced.

A yacht watermaker uses reverse osmosis to separate fresh water from seawater. Controls, filters and membrane-preservation options vary by model and installation, so begin with the equipment aboard. This guide helps owners collect useful observations; it is not an operating or repair procedure.

  1. 01

    Identify the fitted system

Use the nameplate and control panel to identify the equipment and its options. Different watermakers may have manual or automatic controls, and the presence of an automatic feature depends on the installed hardware.

    • Record the make, exact model, serial number, controller and options shown.
    • Keep the relevant manual title and revision with the equipment records.
    • Note whether an automatic flush or membrane-conservation option is actually installed.
  2. 02

    Observe the intake and production

Feed-water conditions put production readings in context. Spectra warns that silt, algae and other suspended matter in some harbours or waterways can load filters or damage pumps and membranes. If contamination is suspected, check the fitted manual’s intake and water-quality limits before making more water; do not keep running solely to collect readings.

    • Note the operating area and visible turbidity, algae, oil or suspected contamination.
    • Record displayed production, quality or salinity readings, pressure and alarm text, where fitted.
    • If available, note seawater temperature, salinity and operating hours for comparison with similar conditions.
  3. 03

Use the specified filter and flush care

Strainers and prefilters protect the system from material in the intake, but their specifications and cleaning rules differ. Spectra warns that washing its own prefilters can let larger particles pass; follow the rule for the fitted filter. Spectra recommends fresh-water flushing after each use to limit mineral residue and biological fouling. Flush controls and instructions vary by configuration.

    • Use the specified filter element and change criteria; record the item and date.
    • Do not wash or reuse a cartridge unless its manufacturer says it can be reused.
    • Use the installed manual or automatic flush control and note if the cycle did not complete.
  4. 04

Separate a routine flush from lay-up

A normal fresh-water flush is routine care. Longer inactivity, seasonal lay-up or decommissioning may require a separate membrane-preservation process and restart steps. HP Watermakers describes AMCS as working with its compatible automatic flushing and pressure-control equipment, which shows why another system’s preservation method should not be assumed to fit.

    • Check the installed manual before an extended stop or return to service.
    • Do not choose, mix or dose a cleaner or preservative from another model’s instructions.
    • If the storage history or installed option is unknown, record that uncertainty for service.
  5. 05

    Keep a useful service record

Dated readings help show whether an output or alarm changed gradually or after a particular condition. Separate observations from work confirmed as complete, then include the yacht’s location and access arrangements in your enquiry.

    • Keep model, serial number, manual revision, date and operating hours together.
    • Record production and quality readings with units, intake conditions, alarms and filter work.
    • Note the last routine flush or lay-up only if known; attach relevant panel or service-record photos.
